The dependence of the laser cooling force on velocity is strongly non-
linear and consists of two narrow peaks associated with co- and counte
r-propagating laser beams. Under these conditions a single intrabeam s
cattering event can knock a particle out of the cooling range. This cr
eates large non-Gaussian tails in the distribution function for longit
udinal velocity. A theoretical model describing single and multiple in
trabeam scattering is considered. A detailed analysis of the scatterin
g and its comparison with experimental data for the ASTRID storage rin
g are performed.
