Clustered materials strongly couple with intense laser radiation. The insta
ntaneous conversion of laser energy into electron energy and subsequent con
version into ion energy leads to an efficient rapid laser energy injection
into high energy (> 10 keV) components of ions. This property of the laser-
cluster interaction allows us to suggest compact ways to trigger nuclear fu
sion. A compact pulsed neutron source as well as a compact fusion reactor a
le considered.
