Abstract
We report the results Of a first-principles theoretical study Of the high-p ressure phase diagram of Si and Gc, with a particular emphasis on the Cmca and r8 phases which have been recently discovered in Si. Our results for th ese phases are in excellent agreement with the available experimental obser vations in the case of Si and we predict the formation of similar phases in Gc.
