Field experiments were conducted during the summers of 1994 and 1995 to tes
t feedback-controlled surge irrigation strategies. Feedback-controlled surg
e irrigation proved promising for better water management in a field with l
arge lateral variations in infiltration rates. It was shown that feedback-c
ontrolled surge irrigation resulted in nearly equal effective depths on bot
h sides of the surge valve and high application efficiencies. Predictions o
f advance inflow time, runoff ratio, and soil water content were compared w
ith field measured values. Modeled predictions were acceptable for practica
l application.
