The use of housing for income generation through informal-sector activities
is widespread in urban areas of developing countries. Most households cons
ider their shelter needs when making housing choices. For households that u
se their dwellings for income generation, housing choices are also business
decisions. Using data from a 596-household survey collected in 1996 in Kum
asi, Ghana, logistic regression is used to examine the determinants of intr
aurban moves. Households using their home for income generation are signifi
cantly less likely to move.
