We consider a noncoercive nonconvex minimization problem with nonlinear per
turbing terms: that arises from equilibrium problems in nonlinear elasticit
y. in which the body is subjected to live outer loadings. By using a genera
lized recession method, we find sufficient and necessary conditions for the
existence of minimizers of the energy functionals. An example is provided
to illustrate the application of the results in cases not treated by usual
recession approaches.
