We present a unified formalism describing the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen test
using spin 1/2 par-tides, photons, and kaons. This; facilitates the compari
son with existing experiments using photons and kaons. It underlines the si
milarities between birefringence and polarization-dependent losses that aff
ect experiments using optical fibers and mixing and decay that are intrinsi
c to the kaons. We also discuss the limitation these two characteristics im
pose on the testing of Bell's inequality. (C) 2001 American Association of
