Jl. Drummond et al., X-RAY PHOTOEMISSION AND ENERGY-DISPERSIVE SPECTROSCOPY OF HYDROXYAPATITE-COATED TITANIUM, Journal of the American Ceramic Society, 80(7), 1997, pp. 1868-1872
The purpose of this study was to determine the chemical composition ch
anges of hydroxyapatite (HA) coated titanium using surface analysis (X
-ray photoemission) and bulk analysis (energy dispersive spectroscopy)
, The specimens examined were controls and specimens aged 30 min and 3
h at room temperature in distilled water and 0.2M sodium phosphate bu
ffer (pH 7.2), Each X-ray photoemission cycle consisted of three scans
followed by argon sputtering for 10 min for usually 20 cycles, corres
ponding to a sampling depth of similar to 1500 Angstrom. The energy di
spersive spectroscopy analysis was on a 110 by 90 mu m area for 500 s.
The X-ray photoemission results indicated the oxidation effect of wat
er on the titanium (as TiO2) and the effect of the buffer to increase
the surface concentration of phosphorus. No differences in the chemica
l composition were observed by energy dispersive spectroscopy analysis
.
