The tensile behaviour of tungsten filaments coated with SiC is correlated w
ith the nature of the interfacial zone. Results show that the tensile stren
gth decreases as the thickness of the interfacial zone increases. The loss
of mechanical performance is limited by weakening of the bonding between th
e interfacial zone and the silicon carbide with the help of a titanium carb
ide interphase. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
