Abstract
A rigorous solution to the problem of diffraction of electromagnetic waves by two balls is presented in terms of scalar potentials of the fields. A me thod of transformation of wave amplitudes under the translation and rotatio n of a spherical system of coordinates is employed. A coupling between TM a nd TE waves is demonstrated in the local systems of coordinates obtained by translation. An improvement of the method of successive diffractions is pr oposed.
