Abstract
This article explores sources of tension associated with the service-learni ng movement in higher education. The authors return to the origins of the m ovement, John Dewey, to find ways to address these tensions. The authors co nclude by suggesting that institutional leaders look to the philosophy of D ewey to create the organizational changes necessary to successfully impleme nt service learning.
