Linear and nonlinear optical properties of a ladder polymer based on t
he poly(p-phenylene) backbone (LPPP) have been investigated. Femtoseco
nd degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) was used for the determination o
f the nonlinear refractive index n(2) at 800 nm, Values of \n(2)\=(3-7
)x10(-13) cm(2)/W were obtained from DFWM measurements on thin films a
nd solutions of the polymer, The two-photon absorption coefficient of
LPPP is estimated to be beta=5x10(-9) cm/W at 800 nm.
