Wa. Cooper, RELATIVISTIC GUIDING CENTER DRIFT ORBITS IN CANONICAL AND MAGNETIC COORDINATES, Plasma physics and controlled fusion, 39(6), 1997, pp. 931-941
The Hamiltonian formulation of the guiding centre drift orbits for thr
ee-dimensional (3D) toroidal configurations with general time-dependen
t electric and magnetic held structures has been extended to cover rel
ativistic particles. For static 3D magnetic fields with nested magneti
c surfaces, a mapping procedure from the equilibrium to the canonical
coordinates is outlined. This transformation is shown to be so complic
ated that it renders impractical most applications in canonical coordi
nates. For magnetic coordinates, the transformation is straightforward
. The relativistic guiding centre drift equations are explicitly deriv
ed with a constrained perturbed magnetic field that allows these coord
inates to adopt a canonical structure.
