Automation of the Pap smear has taken almost half of a century. Two sy
stems have recently received FDA approval for routine use as quality c
ontrol (rescreening) devices. Technical triumphs are overshadowed by c
urrent conflicts among cytopathology professionals, clinicians, patien
ts, and device manufacturers. The historic perspective of this potenti
ally volatile situation provides the backdrop for possible solutions b
ased on the scientific validity of this evolving technology.
