The strong decays of a meson into two mesons are studied in the framework o
f the P-3(0) model. The meson wave functions are determined by means of a r
ealistic chiral quark model constructed in the baryon sector and comparison
is made with a traditional potential of "Coulomb + linear" type. Two diffe
rent forms for the creation vertex are analyzed. A momentum dependent verte
x is proved to be definitively superior. The chiral quark model provides an
overall good description of all known transitions and gives results of rou
ghly the same quality as those obtained from phenomenological quark-antiqua
