Breastfeeding has well-documented, far-reaching benefits for the infant and
the mother. Contraindications are rare but important to appreciate. On an
individual basis, it is a matter of weighing the tremendous benefits of bre
astfeeding against the risk for contraindication. HIV or HTLV 1 infection i
n the mother is a contraindication in developed countries where there are a
dequate substitutes. Only a few drugs are absolute contraindications. Other
situations must be considered on an individual basis.
