Abstract
de Haas-van Alphen measurements made on UxTh1-xBe13 for x less than or equa l to 0.1 reveal that U enters the ThBe13 lattice as a mixed valent impurity of average valence similar to4.7, evinced by topological changes in the Fe rmi surface with x. This implies that U exists in the tetravalent 5f(2) con figuration when diluted and that the strong correlations in UBe13 involve 5 f(2)-->5f(1) transitions. Possible scenarios for the nature of the UxTh1-xB e13 ground state are discussed.
