Two cases of cholecystis and acalculous cholangitis in two males with
AIDS are reported. Diagnosis was made on clinical, histological, and/o
r radiological arguments. Cholecystectomy should have been performed e
arlier so as to relieve the patients, remove chronic gallbladder carri
age, and identify pathogens. Histology of the two gallbladders reveale
d CMV, cryptosporidiae, and microsporidiae; Mycobacterium chelonae was
also found in the gallbladder of one patient. Phosphonoformate treatm
ent seems to be justified in case of CMV discovered in the gallbladder
or in the biliary tract, or when pain is unrelieved after sphincterot
omy. Efficacy of paromomycin must be assessed for cryptosporidiae.
