In the process of establishing science based cultural and scientific relati
ons between Spain and Cuba, they played a key role the scientific studies a
nd contacts taken up by Fernando Ortiz in Spain with prestigious experts in
Anthropology, Criminology, Sociology and History, as well as his conceptio
n of culture, science and nation and the continuous contacts with intellect
uals who were heir to the principles of the Institucion Libre de Ensenanza
and members of the Junta de Ampliacion de Estudios e Investigaciones Cienti
ficas. The consolidation of the cultural relations through the creation of
the Institucion Hispanocubana de Cultura paved the way for the reception of
Spanish intellectual exiles in 1939.
