The quantization of the atom in three acts

The challenge that faced physicists soon after the discovery of the quantum in 1900 was to determine the structure of the atom. Success came through t he application of quantum ideas to this challenge. The focus of these effor ts was the hydrogen atom. Three very different approaches led to the succes sful explanation of the Balmer series of hydrogen and, in the process, the foundation for atomic and molecular physics was established.
