Five genotypes of hexaploid wheat and their Fl hybrids were grown in t
issue culture after three different periods bf callus maintenance, and
were evaluated for plant regeneration capability. Evaluation of the n
umber of regenerated plants per callus showed that this trait is mainl
y determined by additive gene effects, with high heterotic potential.
Plant regeneration capability is relatively easy to select for, especi
ally when; this regeneration is obtained af ter a short period of call
us maintenance. Longer periods of callus maintenance led to a consider
able reduction in plant regeneration capability in wheat.
