Abstract
A highly sensitive interferometric method to measure beat length of fibres with high or low birefringence is described. The method does not require an y mechanical perturbation to the fibre and can accurately measure temporal group delay between polarisation modes of a 0.5m fibre with a birefringence as low as Deltan = 3.64 X 10(-8) Or a beat length of 36m.
