Abstract
Between 1950 and 1990, a large number of publications appeared in the US di
scussing the nature and role of computers. By looking at the topics of thes
e articles, we can begin to understand what such systems were used for and
why. The sampling of more than 1,600 articles and books surveyed here is su
ch a beginning.
