The homodinuclear Cu(II) complex, [(H2L)Cu-2].2H(2)O, of an axamido li
gand, 1,6-di(o-hydroxyphenyl)-4, 7, 10, 14-dimethyl-2,14,-diene-1,8,9,
16-hexadecatetraone, H6L, was used as a chelating agent towards metal
cations. Homo- and heterotetranuclear and polynuclear complexes of the
types [LCu2M2Cl2]. xH(2)O or [(HL)Cu2MCl(OH)(2)](2) . xH(2)O (M = Cu(
II), Ni(II), Mn(II) or Co(II)), [(Hl)Cu-2(UO2)(1/2)(H2O)(1/2)](2) . 6H
(2)O, [LCu2Fe4Cl10(OH2)(4)]. 8H(2)O and [LCu2Fe2(O4S)(2)(MeOH)(2)](n)
are obtained. Addition of LiOH as a deprotonating agent plays an impor
tant rule in producing different products. In addition, on changing th
e molar ratios of the reactants, different complexes were obtained. Th
e products were characterized by chemical analyses, UV-Visible, IR and
ESR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and magnetic moment determination
s. Antiferromagnetic interactions between adjacent metal cations were
observed and are attributed to the effect of the oxamido linkage and c
hloride or oxygen bridges in transferring magnetic effects between dif
ferent metalic cations in the complex molecules.
