Abstract
We apply two commonly used approximation schemes to the problem of a symmet ric dimer with dynamic diagonal disorder. Since the exact analytical soluti on for this simple dissipative quantum system is known, we are in position to test the range of validity and the quality of the approximations and to derive guidelines for the application of the approximations to more complex systems.
