Ultra thin films of Fe deposited on the (100) surface of a Cu single crysta
l exhibit a net perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The addition of very low
coverages of Co results in the easy magnetic direction reorienting into th
e film plane. This behavior is in contrast to the addition of similar amoun
ts of Fe, whereupon the ferromagnetic response vanishes. This result is dis
cussed in terms of the anisotropy energies derived from the spectroscopic d
ata.
