Abstract
Current practice of family planning in China is based on the populatio n policy and strategy of the country. Comprehensive contraceptive meth ods are provided in family planning clinics at all levels. Among the m ethods used, intrauterine devices and tubal sterilization are most pop ular. Vasectomy is popular in some provinces. Oral pills, injectables and subdermal implants occupy a small proportion. Incidence of abortio n is high due to failure of methods and unprotected intercourse. Atten tion is paid to the adoption of emergency contraception to prevent unw anted pregnancy. Improvement in quality of care is the key to a succes sful family planning program. Basic research is essential for developm ent of new contraceptive technology. (C) 1997 International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics.
