Abstract
Track formation in an island gold film on the surface of a LiF single cryst al was studied by means of transmission electron microscopy. Irradiation by Pb ions with an energy of 4.48 MeV/nucleon was carried out at the angles o f 0.5 degrees and 2 degrees with respect to the crystal surface. The quanti ty and shape of the islands removed from the surface during the track forma tion process was investigated with the help of collectors. Possible track f ormation mechanisms are discussed.
