Abstract
The AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) consists of catalytic alpha an d non-catalytic, beta and gamma(38 kDa) subunits and is responsible fo r acting as a metabolic sensor for AMP levels. There are multiple gene s for each subunit and we find that rat liver AMPK-alpha 2 isoform cat alytic subunit is associated with beta 1 and gamma 1 and not beta 2 or gamma 2 subunit isoforms. The beta 1 and gamma 1 isoforms are also su bunits of the alpha 1 isoform. The sequence of cloned human AMPK-beta 1 is 95% identical in amino acid sequence with rat beta 1. Human chrom osomal localizations were determined for AMPK-alpha 1 (5p11-p14), AMPK -beta 1 (12q24.1-24.3) and AMPK-gamma 1 (12q12-q14), respectively.
