In the annals of Visigothic Spain the Jews emerge as a much persecuted mino
rity. The originality, however, or rather its absence from either the royal
Gothic laws or their accompanying ecclesiastical canons must be fully appr
eciated. It is seen, in part, through laws relating to marriage between Jew
s and Christians, free and bonded, the subject of the first part of the art
icle. In the second part I explore the complete absence of souvenirs of per
secutions in the annals of the Spanish Jews themselves.
