The complexing properties of chelating polymeric sorbents (CPSs)--substitut
ed (polystyrene) azapyrocatechols-are studied. With the goal of elucidating
the effect of the structure and acidity of the functional groups of the so
rbents on the parameters of Al3(+) and In3(+) chemisorption, correlations b
etween the pK(OH') of the functional groups of the CPSs, on one hand, and t
he pH(50) of chelation and the stability constants log K-st of the polychel
ates, on the other, are found. These correlations enable the prediction of
the physical and chemical parameters of sorbents and of metal sorption with
the purpose of isolating and concentrating trace aluminum and indium from
objects of various origins.
