Abstract
A series of quaternary ammonium salts has been tested as phase transfer age nts to promote reactions between phenols and alkyl halides in an aqueous so lution of sodium hydroxide in the absence of organic solvent. Methyltriocty lammonium chloride emerges as the most effective catalyst.
