Heterotrophic flagellates, centrohelid heliozoa and filose amoebae wer
e recorded from cultures derived from water collected at marine and fr
eshwater sites in the Antarctic. Marine samples were collected in the
vicinity of Prydz Bay, southeast Antarctica and freshwater samples fro
m Sombre Lake on Signy Island and Crooked and Druzhby Lakes in the Ves
tfold Hills. Thirty-five species were identified. One new species, Kii
toksia kaloista (Protista incertae sedis), is described. The other spe
cies have been previously reported from other geographic locations, pr
oviding no evidence for endemism in protozoan species found in Antarct
ica.
