Abstract
In many laboratories, technicians still record data from instruments by han d and then enter the data into a laboratory computer. Needless to say, this is a slow process that is prone to transcription errors. The reasons for t his limited automation are discussed in this article, and recent advances i n technology are described that will extend automation to many of the small er laboratory instruments that are used daily for routine measurements.
