Abstract
The elastic deformation of host layers is calculated by constructing a mode l where the host layers, regarded as continuous two-dimensional elastic she ets, are infinitely stacked and compressible intercalants, represented by h armonic springs, are intercalated into them. If we treat the intercalants a s being rigid relative to the soft host layers in the stage-1 graphite inte rcalation compound, Li(x)C6 (0 less than or equal to x less than or equal t o 1), the calculated average gallery spacing agrees well with the experimen ts, without using any adjustable parameter.
