Abstract
DNA replication in Escherichia coli is controlled at the initiation stage, possibly by regulation of the essential activity of DnaA protein. The cellu lar membrane has long been hypothesized to be involved in chromosomal repli cation. Accumulating evidence, both in vitro and in vivo, that supports the importance of membrane phospholipids influencing the initation activity of DnaA is reviewed.
