A wide variety of transcatheter procedures have developed for palliation an
d therapy of newborns with congenital heart disease. Over the past 30 years
interventional cardiac catheterization has developed as a distinct subspec
ialty, playing a major role in the management of infants and children with
heart disease. This article discusses various procedures that are routinely
performed in the newborn, either for palliation or therapy, as adjunct to
surgery or in place of surgical intervention.
