In the central region of Mexico where the great national metropolis is loca
ted, the principal industrial states underwent, during the eighties, a seve
re economic crisis that led to a process of industrial restructuring, a cut
back in immigration, a striking rise in emigration, and therefore a negativ
e migratory balance for the region. In the first half of the nineties, howe
ver, those states and the region as a whole partially recovered their econo
mic and migratory dynamism.
