Abstract
First-order compensation of polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) leaves resid ual, higher order PMD. We analyze the accumulation of residual distortion i n cascades of compensated Fibers, Total distortion is calculated and limita tions on the total propagation length are given, While compensation can gre atly extend total propagation distance, its effectiveness diminishes rapidl y as bandwidth is increased.
