The characteristics of advanced write- and nonequalized tape channels have
been modeled and evaluated to investigate the impact of the equalization on
future tape channels, realizing that several factors regarding write-equal
ization (WE) should be taken into account, It is found that the use of WE c
an improve nonlinear distortion in the write process and reduce read-equali
zer requirements even for media with a moment (M(R)delta) as low as 1 memu/
cm(2), and may therefore continue to offer advantages to future thin metal-
particle (MP) tape systems.
