Abstract
This paper provides a critical review of the literature of agricultura l development economics over the past thirty years, against the backgr ound of a contention that the discipline has recently lost some influe nce on the policy agenda. The literature is discussed in categories wh ich are thematic and chronological: farm economics; project planning; policy reform, environmental economics and the new institutional econo mics. Recommendations are made as to directions in which the disciplin e should move forward.
