The magnetization and magnetoelastic properties of melt-spun ribbons Tb.3Dy
.7(CezFe1-z)(1.96) (0.025 less than or equal to z less than or equal to 0.2
) have been investigated as a function of increasing cerium content. The ri
bbons exhibit a nanocrystalline structure which becomes more amorphous with
increasing cerium content. Room temperature coercivities remain similar to
80 kA/m but low temperature coercivities increase with cerium percentage,
A change in the anisotropy is observed, below 50 K, for the 0.125 compositi
on, resulting in nonsaturation of the sample, Saturation magnetostriction l
ambda (s) varies considerably with the addition of Ce, reaching a maximum o
f 850 ppm at 230 K, for z = 0.075 composition.
