Rhyolitic ignimbrites of the Cape Granite Suite, southwestern Cape Province, South Africa

Based on textural and geochemical evidence, the existence of Late Precambri an rhyolitic volcanism related to the Cape Granite Suite is illustrated. Re crystallised rhyolitic ignimbrites represent the volcanic phase of a subvol canic to volcanic sequence composed of rhyodacite to rhyolitic magma. Textu ral features including fiamme, pumice fragments and glass shards provide un equivocal evidence for the volcanic origin of these rocks. (C) 2001 Publish ed by Elsevier Science Limited.
