Abstract
Method requirements for the characterization of stationary phases are estab lished. The completeness of the method and the influence of a mixed retenti on mechanism involving both solvation and adsorption on characteristic phas e parameters are discussed. The performance of the retention and the solvat ion parameter model for the characterization of stationary phases is compar ed. Stationary phases are characterized in the retention model by retention data measured for prototypical substances, and in the solvation parameter model by explanatory regression coefficients found by a statistical method. A new approach is proposed which combines the advantages of the retention and the solvation model. The low proton acidity of low molecular weight pol yethylene glycol phases has been found with the combined model.
