Abstract
Hereditary stratification is usually explained in relation to economic comp lexity. However, the ethnographic evidence does not readily support such ex planations. Examples from Southeast Asia, Melanesia, Polynesia, and the Wes t Coast of Canada suggest that hereditary stratification derives from the s ocial construction of leadership.
