Abstract
Correlation between orbital structure and magnetic ordering in layered mang anites is examined. A level separation between the 3d(3z2-r2) and 3d(x2-y2) orbitals in a Mn ion is calculated in the ionic model for a large number o f the compounds. It is found that the relative stability of the orbitals do minates the magnetic transition temperatures as well as the magnetic struct ures at zero temperature. A mechanism of the correlation between orbital an d magnetism is explained by a theory based on the model with the two Eg orb itals under strong electron correlation.
