Abstract
The author gives a chronological account of the birth of the title of Docto r of Veterinary Medicine in France. In 1866, thanks to a reform of the Veterinary Education, volonteer students could write a thesis at the end of their studies. These theses didn't give any official title but they were at the origin of the creation of the titl e of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. From 1921 onward several institutions started to clamour for the establishm ent of Veterinary Doctorate. Yet it wasn't until 1923 that debates at the Senat and at the Chambre Des D eputes led to the promulgation of the 12(th) July 1923 Act in which the deg ree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine was officially created. In 1924, Public Administration regulations and the first official figures f or 1925-26 academic year were published. In 1956, the title of <<Maitre es Sciences Veterinaires>> and a University degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine were set up for foreign veterinaria ns.
