Abstract
The paper analyses the process of the granting of loans in the lending busi ness. The construction of creditworthiness is subject to consideration of t he particular case of international merchant banks in Central Europe. Espec ially in the context of the process of transformation that banks in these c ountries undergo, credit decisions are necessarily uncertain decisions sinc e indispensable requirements for the rating of companies have yet to be imp lemented. During the process of decision-making, banks are confronted with the necessity to produce knowledge in order to reduce uncertainty. The pape r provides insight into the specific logic of banking procedures along with the process of negotiation through which creditworthiness is established, as well as into the importance of trust in numbers and clients.
