Abstract
Functionalized (phenylethynyl)phenylthiol acetates, such as 4-(4'-formyphen yl-ethynyl)phenylthiol acetate (8a) and 4-(4'-hydroxycarbonyphenylethynyl)p henylthiol acetate (9), were readily synthesized from commercially availabl e 4-bromobenzenethiol (1) as the sulfur source using palladium-catalyzed co upling reactions in key steps. These compounds are important intermediates containing linear pi -conjugated systems for preparing self-assembled monol ayers on Sold surfaces.
