Abstract
This personal comment records the contributions of the late Dr John Smyth a nd Royal Newcastle Hospital to surgical audit and surgical training. Smyth introduced surgical audit to this country against considerable professional opposition. The first publication on the subject appeared in The Medical J ournal of Australia in 1959.
